Experience

Engineering and
technical leadership.

Roles and responsibilities behind the medical software, connected devices and research tools in my portfolio.

Career

August 2026 – Present / Eric Schaal E.I.

Independent software developer

I delivered OpenBarcode’s React Native/Expo admission app through my independent software practice, owning UI/UX, integration with the existing backend and app-store delivery. Testing and improvements continue with client feedback.

Software innovation lead

I developed embedded prototypes and tools for manufacturing, quality and other business teams.

Connected-device research

With mechanical and electrical engineers, I turned a clip-on tourniquet-monitor concept into a working prototype. I owned the complete Rust firmware system, including patient-use, factory and fault states and calibration/flashing tools, plus the React Native companion app’s architecture, UI/UX and USB-C/NFC protocols.

In a separate project, I built a patient-worn Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LoRa gateway prototype for carrying MY01 measurements to the cloud.

Manufacturing tools

A technician’s assembly problem became a Rust application on Raspberry Pi that detects devices accidentally powering on during production. I stored detections in InfluxDB and built Grafana views showing when and where devices were detected. The tool became part of MY01’s manufacturing workflow.

Earlier fault detection saved the production team an estimated hundreds of hours per assembly batch.

AI across business operations

I designed and developed a Slack agent with live access to the Oracle database behind IFS ERP and company quality-management documents. Most employees used it daily for operational questions, inventory queries and document retrieval. I also built scheduled training and approval reminders.

Software developer / Lead software developer

I led medical-app development from the first prototype through FDA clearance and into clinical use, staying hands-on while taking responsibility for architecture, planning, code review, mentoring, hiring and releases. I led 2 direct reports and collaborated closely with clients and the firmware team.

Connected medical software

My work covered user needs, technical architecture, design outputs and software verification and validation under ISO 13485. The app earned FDA Breakthrough Device designation. I also built native modules and worked on most app/device Bluetooth communication protocols, including mutual authentication, time synchronization and data export.

I established the mobile test and release pipelines and was responsible for the team’s adherence to IEC 62304, the medical-software lifecycle standard.

Web and backend systems

I led frontend development of a React/Next.js clinician-registration portal. For a separate hospital-connectivity project, I developed Terraform certificate provisioning, architected and deployed a Rust certificate-management service, and developed MQTT ingestion and scenario-based integration tests with simulated MQTT gateway clients.

The service environment used Docker, Kubernetes, relational databases and Kafka; I also participated in on-call rotations and the team’s migration of Java/Spring services to Rust.

Compliance integration

I built a Rust synchronizer between Hexnode and Vanta, reverse-engineering the web application’s REST API to retrieve information unavailable through the public API. It handled authentication, email-based 2FA and rate limiting, and enriched device data with Active Directory/LDAP. Development continued into my innovation role. MY01 was still using the synchronizer in October 2026.

Concurrent responsibility: Chief security officer

From 2021 to March 2025, I also led implementation of the company’s information security program, developed policies for the company’s security-compliance program, performed internal audits, hardened Linux hypervisors and implemented off-site disaster recovery.

Machine learning for clock stability

I developed deep-learning compensation that learns an individual oscillator’s behaviour and corrects clock drift in real time. An experimentally validated prototype achieved less than 6 microseconds of drift over 24 hours. I trained the model using generated data and conducted experiments supporting a provisional patent application.

Chip design tools & simulation

I built bidirectional DXF/GDSII conversion used daily by the micromechanical design team, saving hours per export or import.

In another project within that contract, I built a React interface for exploring COMSOL simulation results.

I also built the engineering team’s 4-server Proxmox cluster, remote workstations and simulation environment, upgraded networking from 1 to 10 Gbps, and implemented on-site/off-site backups and Prometheus/Grafana monitoring.

Software development intern

I joined as employee #7 and the first non-embedded software engineer. I built the first proof of concept of what became the MY01 mobile app, developed a clinical- and animal-study data-collection pipeline, and recruited a backend developer.

Full-time in summer 2017, then intermittent part-time work during my studies.
